As of Feb. 10, 2024, 50 members of Congress—seven members of the U.S. Senate and 43 members of the U.S. House—announced they would not seek re-election in 2024.

Of the U.S. Senate members not running for re-election, six—U.S. Sens. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Tom Carper (D-Del.), Mitt Romney (R-Utah), Laphonza Butler (D-Calif.), and Joe Manchin (D-W. Va.)—announced their retirements from public office, while the other—U.S. Sen. Mike Braun (R-Ind.)—is running for governor of Indiana.

As of February 5, 2022, 41 U.S. House members had announced they were not running for re-election. Thirty-four members had announced at this point in the 2020 cycle, and 42 had announced at this point in the 2018 cycle.
